If you went back in time, you might be a little confused by the street signs around the Florence, KY area. That’s because Florence was once known as Crossroads, since it was located at the crossroads of Burlington and Union. In 1821, the town of Crossroads got a brand new name – but not what you may think. Thomas Madden, a Covington attorney, named the town Maddentown and then Jacob Connor renamed it Connersville nearly a decade later. So, why did the town become “Florence?” There was already a Connersville, KY! And Florence has remained the name ever since its incorporation in 1830.
Florence, KY is full of charm, and one of the best examples of the local humor is the famous water tower. As you drive by the I-71/I-75 highway, you can look out your window to see the gigantic striped tower with “Florence Y’all” painted on the side.
