How to Check Tire Tread on Your Chevy

November 18th, 2018 by

The tires on your Chevy car, truck, or SUV are one of the most importants parts of your vehicle. Over time, the tires naturally experience wear and tear from regular driving, road conditions, and braking habits. As part of your routine automotive maintenance, you should check the tire tread to ensure that it’s not worn down too far. You might be thinking that this is a task better left to the professionals, but it’s quite easy to check tire tread at home.

A tire may become unsafe when it’s down to 1/16th of an inch. A simple way to check your tread depth is with the penny test. Here’s how it works:

  • Place a penny upside down with Lincoln facing you in the center groove of the tire.
  • If you you can see the very top of Lincoln’s head or the copper above it, replace the tire immediately.
  • If Lincoln’s hair is partially visible, it’s time to visit our Chevrolet-certified service experts and shop for replacement tires.
