Performance and Fuel Economy

The 2017 Chevrolet Equinox is offered with a pair of engine options, both of which come standard with a six-speed automatic transmission. On all but the base trim, you can also upgrade to all-wheel drive. The base engine on the 2017 Chevrolet Equinox is a 2.4L four-cylinder that makes 182 hp and 172 lb-ft of torque and can tow up to 1,500 pounds when properly equipped.

A FWD model gets a competitive EPA-estimated 31 mpg highway and 21 mpg city. Those who want a little more oomph behind the wheel can get a 3.6L V6 engine fitted to the LT and Premier trim. This model dishes out a commanding 301 hp and 272 lb-ft of torque and has a maximum towing capacity of 3500 pounds.

Trims and Features

Paying less for a crossover SUV doesn’t mean getting less, at least when you go with the 2017 Chevrolet Equinox.

  • L: Even the base trim comes with the OnStar telematics system with automatic crash notification, emergency roadside assistance, and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. You’ll get Bluetooth and a 7-inch touchscreen, as well as 17-inch alloy wheels.
  • LS: The biggest difference on the LS is the introduction of available all-wheel drive. Other perks include upgraded exterior styling, such as more high-end wheels, bumpers, and door handles. You’ll also get satellite radio and the option of a towing package.
  • LT: The second-highest trim level adds the Chevrolet MyLink touchscreen interface, as well as smartphone integration and voice-activated controls. Rear privacy glass increases security, and roof rack side rails give you more utility.
  • Premier: The highest trim level rides on 18-inch alloy wheels and comes with fog lights and chromes accents on the outside. It also boasts leather upholstery, a power driver’s seat, heated front seats, and a sport-tuned suspension with V6-equipped models.

The 2017 Chevrolet Equinox can comfortably seat up to five passengers and has a total interior volume of 131.2 cubic feet. You’ll also have a spacious 31.5 cubic feet dedicated for cargo in back. Fold down the rear seat, and you’ll get a maximum cargo volume of 63.7 cubic feet. Every model comes with high-quality materials in the cabin, but as you move to the top of the trim ladder, you’ll get leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and heated front seats.

Reviews for the 2017 Chevrolet Equinox are rolling in, and the consensus is that it has everything most drivers in this segment are looking for at a reasonable price.

  • The Car Connection: “The Chevrolet Equinox has struck the right chord for many compact crossover buyers. It offers a range of powertrains, including front- or all-wheel drive; it can be fuel efficient; and it's relatively large.”
  • Edmunds: “The 2017 Chevrolet Equinox is a solid bet if you want a reasonably sized crossover SUV with plenty of backseat space. You can also upgrade to a powerful V6 engine, which is an unusual treat in this class.”
