Performance

For obvious reasons, gasoline is not the ideal power source for combat vehicles. The Chevrolet Colorado ZH2 runs on hydrogen fuel cells instead. This power source allows the pickup to run quietly, and at a cooler temperatures, so that it’s less detectable. It also provides superior amounts of high-wheel torque and fuel efficiency that is unheard of in a pickup. Finally, a unique feature built into the ZH2 allows soldiers to divert hydrogen energy away from the pickup in order to power equipment in the field.

Size

The Chevrolet Colorado ZH2 rides on a stretched mid-sized pickup chassis that enables it to bulk up significantly. The pickup stands tall at 6.5-feet, with 37-inch wheels, and more than 7-feet wide. It features reinforcements inside and out and rides on modified suspension a. Those upgrades allow the pickup to tackle all manner of terrains and stand up to sustained abuse for longer.

Application

This one-off concept vehicle has been designed exclusively for military applications, meaning that civilians won’t be able to get anywhere near it. However, Chevrolet is taking advantage of the development cycle to study the feasibility of hydrogen-powered trucks more in-depth. In fact, Chevrolet has already test driven hydrogen vehicles 3.1 million miles, and the Colorado ZH2 will only add to that figure. Advances that prove practical for the military could make it into production models someday soon.
