2016 Chevrolet Tahoe vs. 2016 Chevrolet Suburban

If you’re the kind of driver who lives by the philosophy of “Go big or go home,” there are limited vehicle options available these days. That hasn’t stopped Chevrolet from continuing to offer two of the largest and more capable full-size SUVs on the market with the 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe and the 2016 Chevrolet Suburban. These are both solidly built, body-on-frame SUVs with serious capabilities, and they sport cavernous interiors with lots of standard features. While they have lots to offer, there are some differences that need to be considered, from budget to size and beyond.

A Quick Look at Each Vehicle

  • MSRP from $47,000
  • 8,600-pound towing capacity
  • New 8-inch touchscreen
  • 121.7 cubic feet of cargo space
  • Driver Alert package
  • 31 gallon fuel tank

There is plenty to consider when considering the performance capabilities of the 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe and the 2016 Chevrolet Suburban. On the surface, things look quite similar, and that’s not a bad thing. Both come standard with a 5.3L EcoTec V8 engine fitted to a six-speed shiftable automatic transmission that pumps out an impressive 355 hp and 385 lb-ft of torque, which can be delivered to the rear wheels or all four via the available 4WD system.

Still, there are some differences to think about. First of all, the 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe can tow up to 8,600 pounds when properly equipped with the two-wheel drive system. The 2016 Chevrolet Suburban’s maximum towing capacity is 8,300 pounds. That’s not a huge difference, but it’s something to factor into your decision.

Fuel Economy

While fuel efficiency may not be the first priority for most SUV buyers in the Florence and Cincinnati area, Chevrolet has made strides to make both of these models more efficient over the years. For the 2016 model year, both the Chevrolet Suburban and the Chevrolet Tahoe get an EPA-estimated 23 mpg highway and 16 mpg city. However, you’ll be able to drive the Chevrolet Suburban even longer, thanks to its 31.0 gallon fuel tank. That’s quite a bit bigger than the 26.0 gallon tank on the Chevrolet Tahoe.

Passenger and Cargo Space

Both vehicles provide a tremendous amount of passenger space and cargo space that is sufficient to handle whatever task at hand. Depending on the version you choose, the 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe and the 2016 Chevrolet Suburban will provide seating for seven, eight, or even nine passengers.

While they provide plenty of seating, those who want room for everything may want to look at the Suburban, as it guarantees 39.3 cubic feet of cargo space behind the back row of seats, while its maximum cargo capacity measures an incredible 121.7 cubic feet. The Tahoe also has a serious amount of cargo room by most standards, but its measurements are noticeably smaller than the Suburban’s at 15.3 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 94.7 cubic feet total.

While the 2016 Chevrolet Tahoe and the 2016 Chevrolet Suburban are priced fairly similarly, the Suburban comes in above the Tahoe at each trim level. Both SUVs are available in LS, LT, and LTZ trim levels divided into 2WD and 4WD sub-categories. The price range on the Chevrolet Suburban is an MSRP from $49,700 for the 2WD LS to $67,310 for a 4WD LTZ trim. The Chevrolet Tahoe, on the other hand, has an MSRP from $47,000 for the 2WD LS, while its top level 4WD LTZ comes in from $64,610.

These models come equipped with quite similar features and packages at each trim level. Standard equipment abounds, from OnStar telematics with 4G LTE Wi-Fi to the Chevrolet MyLink interface, Apple CarPlay, and Siri Eyes Free. You’ll also have access to advanced safety features like front parking sensors, lane departure warning, forward collision alert, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. You can even get a safety seat that vibrates your seat belt when the system senses a potential danger.
