Performance and Fuel Economy
There are three different engine options available on the 2017 Chevrolet Colorado, beginning with a 2.5L four-cylinder that makes 200 hp and 191 lb-ft of torque. Move up to the 2.8L Duramax turbodiesel four-cylinder, and you’ll get 181 hp and a robust 369 lb-ft of torque. You can also choose to go with a 3.6L DI DOHC VVT V6 engine that produces 308 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque. Maximum fuel economy on the Colorado comes from the turbo-diesel engine at up to 30 mpg highway, while maximum towing comes from the turbo-diesel at 7,700 pounds.
If you decide the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is the right way to go, then you’ll have three different engines to choose from, as well. The base engine is a 4.3L EcoTec3 V6 that makes 285 hp and a best-in-class 305 lb-ft of torque. The second engine is a 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 that puts out 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque and gets a best-in-class V8 fuel economy of 23 mpg highway and 16 mpg city. At the top of the lineup is the 6.2L EcoTec3 V8, which is good for 420 hp, 460 lb-ft of torque, and a best-in-class maximum towing capacity of 12,500 pounds.
Both of these trucks get you a lot of power and features for your money, but they fit into distinct price points.
- Chevrolet Colorado: MSRP from $20,055 to $40,560
- Chevrolet Silverado 1500: MSRP from $27,585 to $57,420
The 2017 Chevrolet Colorado is available in two different cab configurations. The Extended Cab version features a small rear door and seating for up to six passengers, while the Crew Cab model gives you a larger entry door and extra room for backseat passengers. You’ll also have your choice between a short truck bed measuring just over 5 feet and a long bed measuring just over 6 feet in length.
If you opt for the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, then you’ll have three different cab configurations from which to choose. The Regular Cab comes with a single row of seats for three passengers. As with the Colorado, the Extended Cab increases seating to six, and the Crew Cab gives you easier entry in back and more room for backseat passengers. Depending on the cab configuration you go with, you’ll have truck bed options measuring from just under 6 feet to just over 8 feet in length.
Which Truck Should You Choose?
There’s no questioning the high accolades of both the 2017 Chevrolet Colorado and the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. At the end of the day, though, they still appeal to different driving needs. If you’re looking for a more affordable entry into the pickup segment that’s fuel-efficient and well equipped while delivering a composed performance, then the Colorado is a solid choice. On the other hand, the Silverado 1500 offers unquestionable appeal for those who need a truck with a serious amount of towing capacity and robust V8 power.
