Design Characteristics

2016 Chevrolet Cruze ExteriorAs a subcompact model, the 2016 Chevrolet Sonic is ideal for daily commutes and small trips. Plus, the choice of the Sonic as a sedan or a hatchback means there’s more room should you need it. You’ll have standard seating for five passengers regardless of which version you choose. The sedan features a cabin volume of 105.2 cubic feet and a trunk measuring 14.9 cubic feet. The hatchback, on the other hand, has a cabin that fills 109.2 cubic feet and a maximum cargo volume of 47.7 cubic feet

The 2016 Chevrolet Cruze is a fully redesigned compact sedan. One of the big highlights for the new models year is a noticeable upgrade in rear seat space, particularly in legroom. Cabin quality has also seen a noticeable upgrade, including more soft-touch materials. This model provides standard seating for five, as well. Interior volume and cargo measurements haven’t yet been revealed.

You’ll have two different engine options with the 2016 Chevrolet Sonic. LS and LT models get a 1.8L four-cylinder engine paired to a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. It makes 138 hp and 125 lb-ft of torque while getting up to an EPA-estimated 40 mpg highway and 29 mpg city. The LTZ and R trims get an upgraded turbocharged 1.4L inline-four that gets a boost to 138 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque. This model reaches up to an EPA-estimated 34 mpg highway and 27 mpg city.

Every version of the 2016 Chevrolet Cruze comes powered by a turbocharged 1.4L inline-four and the option for either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. You’ll get a confident output of 153 hp and 177 lb-ft of torque, and outstanding fuel economy estimates up to 40 mpg highway and 30 mpg city, according to the EPA.

2016 Chevrolet CruzeBoth of these vehicles are quite accessibly priced for their respective segments, but it’s good to budget before making your pick.

  • 2016 Chevrolet Sonic: MSRP from $16,620 for the L trim to $23,120 for the Premier trim
  • 2016 Chevrolet Cruze: MSRP from $14,345 for the LS sedan to $21,495 for the RS hatchback

Which Sedan is Better for Your Driving Needs?

There is plenty to consider before deciding on the vehicle that will best suit your daily driving needs. If you’re looking for a small commuter or a first vehicle, the 2016 Chevrolet Sonic might be the right choice. The Sonic’s affordable starting price, maneuverability, and great standard fuel economy make it a solid pick. The availability of extra cargo space on the hatchback version is also appealing.

On the other hand, the all-new 2016 Chevrolet Cruze provides a surprisingly ample amount of space for a small family sedan. It provides extra creature comforts and room to stretch out. For a little bit more money, it also produces a bit more power than the Chevrolet Sonic while actually getting slightly better fuel economy. It’s important to note that while there is not currently a hatchback version of the Chevrolet Cruze, there is one on the way for the 2017 model year.
