Used vs. CPO: What's the Difference?

Used Cars from Above

If you’re a used car shopper around Cincinnati, OH or Covington, you might be wondering just what it means for a vehicle to be “Certified Pre-Owned.” You’re not alone in asking about used vs. CPO, and while both are categories of used cars, there are some significant distinctions — particularly in price. Read on to learn about the differences and be prepared when it’s time to buy your next used car, truck, SUV, or minivan.

What to Know About Buying a Used Car

Used vehicles are vehicles that have been previously driven by other owners. While we are a Chevy dealer, you’ll find used cars of all makes and models in our inventory.

  • Each used car is unique, which means they’ll vary significantly in cost, model year, mileage, and the number of owners, offering significant variety for Florence used car and seven-passenger SUV shoppers.
  • If finding an affordable car is your top priority, used cars will often be more affordable than CPO vehicles — in fact, we have a selection of used cars under $10,000 for the budget-conscious driver.
  • Worried about mileage? You probably shouldn’t be. Cars, trucks, SUVs, and minivans are made better now than they’ve ever been. You’ll find small sedans that soar past 100,000 miles with no trouble, and trucks that can run that odometer up to 200,000 and 300,000 miles.

What to Know About Buying a CPO Car

Certified Pre-Owned vehicles are part of a CPO program created by the manufacturer that has specific rules. In the case of Chevy vehicles, each CPO model has to meet the following requirements:

  • Be within the last 5 model years
  • Have fewer than 75,000 miles
  • Pass a 172-Point Vehicle Inspection and Reconditioning Process
  • Have all safety recalls implemented
  • Have a clean title
  • Include a vehicle history report

Because these vehicles have been inspected and reconditioned, Chevy includes some additional warranty coverage with them. The inspection, reconditioning, and warranty are the main reasons why CPO cars cost more than used.
